The following is a hypertext copy of the 1853 Hagans-Cockrill overland travel journal including some (i. e. this needs further expansion) of the research notes of Jeanne Thurlow Miller. Zilhart's original spellings, which were in parenthesis in the typescript copy were returned to the main body of the text, while the "corrections" were removed to footnotes. Note by Ms. Miller on the cover page of this copy: |
Being a typescript copy of a manuscript copy of the original. Said copy was made at an uncertain date by Mrs. C. R. (Edith Hoag) Townsend and is now in the possession of Miss Aletha Hoag, Santa Rosa. Mrs. Townsend was assisted in her work by Miss Helen Hoag, who had personal knowledge of the trip from her mother, a member of the party. The original, the property of Mr. C. F. Zilhart of Oakland, California, at this date (December, 1959) he declares to be irretrievably lost. It is to the good offices of Mrs. Townsend and Miss Helen Hoag that we are indebted for the survival of this material, and to Miss Aletha Hoag for permission to use it.
|
There is another story however by Shirley Pope, a Zilhart descendant, that this typescript copy was done by Florence Wells.
