		  In 1887, a
house-mover, Charles Goslaw, went to San Jose, leaving H. A. Grant in charge of
his tools with instructions not to move them. Goslaw had too much to drink in
San Jose, and returning home in a drunken stupor, he found that Grant had moved
his tools to another part of town. Angered at this, Goslaw went to Grant's
cabin and beat the old man severely. Leaving Grant bruised and helpless on the
floor, he went to the Constable and asked to be arrested for assault and
battery. A few days later Grant died. People became incensed against these
frequent crimes and feeling was running high. Goslaw was brought to trail,
			 found guilty and hanged. |
