Dear Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery, Nine sturdy volunteers gathered at the cemetery yesterday, under unusually cloudy skies. The cemetery has done well so far this summer. The paths were very leaf strewn, but otherwise all was in good shape. I'm pleased to report that Brad DaVall joined us to handle the Heffron stones that were discovered this past May. After cleaning the stones and digging up/leveling the bases, Brad was able to reset them. I feel particularly happy about restoring poor Evilena's stone. She, and her sister, had been listed in the 1934 DAR cemetery survey, prompting me to research her name. After finding that she had been scalded by an overturned kettle and lingered in agony for 11 days before dying when not quite 2, I was particularly determined to find and restore her stone. Her story underscores how difficult life could be in 1870. The matching Heffron stones are lovely, with a dove motif adoring them. If you haven't yet gotten a chance to see them, they are located very close to the road in the north east section of the cemetery. Our next workday will be on September 22nd. Several Herbert descendants will be joining us that day, and Paul Schoch will be working to update our official cemetery map with the Heffron stones. Please come and join us if you can. Best Regards, Sue
