Spring Hill Cemetery Work Days

by Susan Zeni

20 June 2014

Dear Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery,

It was a lovely day in Sebastopol. Eight of us gathered at the cemetery to tackle the workday under a strong sun. We inspected, cleared and maintained pathways, hauled debris to the dump truck, and performed maintenance.

Conditions have been warm and dry at the cemetery during the end of Spring, continuing to stress some of our trees. We found a few broken trunks obstructing our paths which we cut up (first picture). The cut up trunk, fallen branches, and the leaves littering our paths were all gathered and hauled to the dump truck (second attachment). As reported in our April recap, we found a very large dead black oak that had split and needed professional removal. Regional Parks efficiently took care of that for us this past month (picture 4 shows the remaining stump). Many thanks, yet again to Regional Parks for their continuing support!

Other maintenance items were also addressed Friday. Sally again brought us more redwood limbs to replace some of the rotted ones lining our paths. She also brought a new fence post and replaced the broken one on the Zilhart enclosure (Picture 3). The base for last month's discovery, the Fairbanks stone, was repaired during the month in preparation for eventual remounting (picture 5). We inspected for bees and for poison oak, but all seemed to be held in check. We will need to clean our monuments and the Zilhart enclosure at some future date. As these activities require water, will wait until drought conditions have eased.

We were delighted to have John Ryan and Jim Piercy of Sonoma County Regional Parks join us towards the end of our work session - just in time for our group picture (final attachment).

Our next work session is scheduled for August 22nd. Please come join us if you can.

Best Regards,

Sue
