Dear
Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery,
It was a cold and clear Friday. We arrived at the cemetery to find it in disarray. This year's series of severe winter storms caused an incredible amount of debris. I haven't seen the cemetery this wild in years. Luckily, no stones were damaged even though numerous heavy limbs fell. Seven of us gathered to tame the chaos.
With so many large branches strewn about, most of our time was consumed with just hauling them to the dump truck. The large central fir tree seemed to shed an enormous quantity of material. The Eucalyptus also contributed, as did the drought weakened oaks.
Some time was also spent raking the main paths and maintaining them, so that visitors will still be able to safely wander through. Although most of the large debris was cleared, the seven of us were unable to leave the cemetery in the pristine condition we strive for. There was just too much for us, and too much for the dump truck. There will be plenty left for us to tackle on April 7th!
There was an upside to all the storms. The fierce rains cleaned our headstones. During the last several years of drought, we did not want to use water to power wash the stones. They were ingrained with dirt. As the third picture shows, they are gorgeous now, with their inscriptions once again clearly visible.
Many thanks to those who joined in the clean up effort on Friday. Please mark your calendars for April 7th, and come to the next work day if you can. The cemetery will have plenty for all of us to do.
Best Regards,
Sue
