Spring Hill Cemetery Work Days

by Susan Zeni

28 December 2018

Dear Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery,

Because our November workday was rained out, today was a "make-up" session. Only 5 of us gathered to tackle the task. Skies were sunny and bright, perfect working conditions.

We found the cemetery a mess. Large tree limbs were down in several places across our paths (pictures 1 and 2). Leaves were everywhere. I haven't seen our cemetery in this much disarray in several years. Some of the fallen limbs were so large we needed to take a chain saw to them to get them in small enough pieces to remove.

The ground was also very wet, making our debris collection harder due to the weight of all the added moisture. Various types of mushrooms abounded - some quite picturesque (picture 3). Also the narcissus bulbs and lilies are sprouting up.

With all the debris, we made quick work of completely filling the dump truck (picture 4). We stopped a bit early, 11:30, due to exhaustion, and lack of room for more debris in the truck! The main paths are now clear again, but we had to leave some of the leaves for next time. Hopefully we will have a bigger crew in February. Conditions are perfect for probing for stones, but we need to have more people for that.

Many thanks to Regional Parks in supporting our make up date. And EXTRA thanks to those who volunteered today - I know it is an extremely busy time of year for all of us.

Wishing everyone a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Best Regards,

Sue
