Jno, R. Burner of Massanutten Heights John R. Burner was a fifer in the War of 1812. He and his wife went to housekeeping in the old Burner home, Fort Burner, opposite the mouth of Lick Branch. It has been torn away, but the chimney and vaulted cellar are still there. John R. Burner afterwards moved to Massanutten on property acquired by his wife from the estate of Isaac Strickler. There was only a small cabin on this farm at the time. It stood at the foot of the hill below the pike and near a spring. They aftwards built a brick house on top of the hill above th pike, which still stands. After the marriage of their son, John A. Burner, he occupied the mansion house, and John R. Burner moved about one mile nearer the foot of the mountain where he operated a small mill and spent his last days. This house afterwards burned, but the chimney still stands. John R. and his wife were members of the Old School Baptist church, and the former took an active part and led in singing.
