Kennon Gilbert,
first planning
technician, dies

Kennon R. Gilbert, Sonoma County's first planning technician, the former general manager of the Sonoma County Taxpayer's Association and retired program director of CETA, died Easter Sunday in a Santa Rosa convalescent hospital. He was 73.

On Jan. 2, 1942 Gilbert was hired as Sonoma County's first planning technician, leaving a Sonoma architecture firm to take the job.

A University of California graduate, Gilbert and previously been a rancher, designer and commercial artist.

He resigned from the staff of the Sonoma County Planning Commision in 1952 to become the general manager of the Sonoma County Planning Commision in 1952 to become the generatl manager of the Sonoma County Taxpayers Association (SCTPA). In 1962, he accepted a similar position with the Sacramento County Tax League and worked in that capacity until 1967, when he returned to Santa Rosa where he once again was hired as the general manager of the SCTPA.

In 1971, he again resigned from the SCTPA and became the director of Sonoma County's new CETA program. He retired in 1974.

A native of California, Gilbert lived in Sonoma County 62 years. He was a member and past master of Santa Rosa Lodge 57, F & AM, and the Scottish Rite Bodies of California.

He leaves his widow, Florence W. Gilbert, Santa Rosa; daughters Lora Kleek, Santa Rosa, and Christina Ligon, Brentwood; sons, James Lancina, Carmel Valley, and Kennon R. Gilbert Jr., San Mateo, and 13 grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Danie's Chapel of the Roses, with officers of the Santa Rosa Lodge 57 officiating. Private inturnment is at Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a favorite charity.
