Notes:
Lewis W. Miller appears in the 1860 Census for Anally Township in Sonoma County as L. W. Miller, a 25 year old merchant born in Maine with $5000 of personal estate and no real estate. He is enumerated in dwelling number 100 along with a Hugh Snodgrass another merchant who was born in Pennsylvania.
From Jeanne Miller's Sonoma County in the 19th Century, p. 68: |
Another [stagecoach] route, from Petaluma to Valley Ford via Bloomfield, was driven by an old favorite, George Washington Gilham, until the day he arrived at an unaccustomed, slow pace sitting dead in the driver's seat with the reins still in his hands. He was followed by Lew Miller, one of the most skillful of the stagecoach drivers who undertook a daily mail service to Bloomfield and Valley Ford from Petaluma and Santa Rosa in 1868. He also took the Board of Supervisors on a trip to Duncansville, across Wright's ferry and up the coast to determine the need for a new road. They were convinced.
