From John Fox, a descendant from Whitehead Lawrence (24 Dec 2003 email): |

I have been trying to find clues to validate my Lawrence family tree... What I liked from your d/b is that Rebecca Lawrence, who married Stephen Fowler, had a father named Whitehead Lawrence and the family came from Queens Co. Long Island, NY. From all the info you provided I had to find this family in the 1850 census but what a surprise. They were located on the far eastern end of Long Island. Here is the info: 1850 census Suffolk Co., NY, East Hampton |

In another email from John Fox (11 Jan 2004), he points out that in the 1830 census for Queens Co., NY, N. Hempstead, a Thomas Fowler is listed right before Stephen's father-in-law, Whitehead Lawrence, and a Stephen Fowler is listed after: the ages indicated that Thomas could be Stephen Cornel Fowler's brother while Stephen is his father.
Listed in the 1860 Census for Sonoma County, Bodega Township, Smith's Ranch Post office, as S C Fowler, age 63, bp. New York, master carpenter, with $1000 in real estate and $500 in personal property. Enumerated along with his wife, Rebecca, and 14 year old son, Nathaniel D., living in dwelling #286, next to S L Fowler in dwelling #287, J E Fowler in dwelling #289, and J H Fowler in dwelling #291.
A biography written about him in 1889, is also available in An Illustrated History of Sonoma County, California |
