John Jr. was one of the sons of John about who I had
no information. Helen Decker writes in a letter, "I have tried to fit in
two other Fulkersons, but just can't figure out whose sons they are. One is
Benjamin O. Fulkerson, b. 14 Mar 1814 (I had place him as one of Peter's sons.
L.T.). I think he was born too late to be one of John and Margaret's children.
He is the right age to be one of Peter's children but not child that age is
ever on the census with Peter. Also on the Grayson Co. tax lists in 1849 Peter
seems to have divided his land... probably retired from farming and the land
then appears in the names of William and James H. Peter had 250 acres on Big
Clifty Creek and after 1849 Wm. Sr. and James H. each had 125 acres on Big
Clifty Creek in addition to the acreage they had prior to 1849. I have wondered
if Benjamin could be the son of one of John's sons who perhaps did not come to
Grayson County. What about John Jr.? In Hardin Co., Ky. marriages there are two
marriages for a John Fulkerson -- one to Elizabeth Ogden, 24 Dec 1809 and one
to Lydia Shard, 21 Mar 1811. And Benjamin has a daughter named Lydia. Maybe
we've go something here! John (of John and Margaret) had a young child in his
household in the 1820 census -- so maybe John Jr. and Lydia died shortly after
Benjamin was born or at least before 1820, and he came to live with his
grandparents." I am inclined to agree with Helen because Benjamin was the
one who signed all of the papers for his grandmother's estate in 1839. Helen
continues: "My other problem child is Wm. S. Fulkerson, born ca 1812. He
is #333 on the 1850 census of Grayson County. His wife was Sarah B. (maybe
Bruner). Sarah was several years older than her husband and they apparently had
no children. Maybe he was a son of John Jr's also and reared by another
relative?" I had already concluded that John Jr. must have been William S.
Fulkerson's father, although he could have been Fulkard's, but I have found no
mention of him or a William in the California stories of Fulkard. Peter had a
William who is already documented and the two younger brothers were too young
to be the father of anyone born in 1811. William S. and his wife took one of
the McGrew children to raise, one of William's Aunt Polly's boys, so one
presumes that he belongs to the John and Margaret family.
