Jacob Harris Drops Dead of Heart Disease.
Highly Respected Citizen of Sonoma County for Nearly
Half a Century. Pioneer Jacob Harris' life ended shortly before 1 o'clock.
"Uncle Jake," as he was familiarly known by almost every man, woman
and child in Sonoma county, had attended services at the People's church, and
after leaving there went to the store of the Santa Rosa Paper Company for his
morning paper. After a pleasant chat with his old friend, Judge Moore, he
walked outside, was seen to stagger and fall, and that was the end. The silver
cord had been loosed. Assistance was summoned, but it was of no avail. Death
resulted from heart failure from which Mr. Harris had suffered for years. He
realized for some time that his life would probably end just as it
did.
The deceased was one of the oldest
residents of this section, was well known and much respected. He was a man of
genial disposition and thus won friends. He first arrived in Santa Rosa in 1854
and lived to see the wonderful changes made in the county by the march of
progress.
The deceased was born in Grayson County, Indiana, on
August 24, 1827, and at the time of his death was over 74 years of age. From
Iowa he emigrated to California in 1854 and upon arrival to Santa Rosa he first
located on the ranch later owned by Winfield Wright, for two years. Then he
resided on a ranch north of this city for four years. After three years spent
in Sutter Country he returned to Santa Rosa and has resided on his place near
the cemetery ever since.
His wife, formerly Miss Phoebe Fulkerson, survives
him. They were married in 1848. Two years ago they had a joyous celebration of
their golden wedding. Surviving there are four children -- Thomas M. Harris,
Mrs. Isabelle Weatherington, Richard A. Harris and Miss Florence Harris. While
his death was not altogether unexpected it came as a severe shock to his family
and friends. Mr. Harris was a prominent Mason and member of the Knights of
Pythias of many years standing.
Under Masonic auspices the funeral will take place
from the residence this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
