Diamond Anniversary Is Marked By Schortmans
Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. Schortman, who are widely known in horticultural circles celebrated
the 60th anniversary of their marriage here June 17.
Among guests was his sister, Mrs. Rosa Ernst of Fresno, who was bridesmaid at
their 1913 nuptials. Luncheon in the garden of the Schortman home at 849 West
Putnam was followed by open house from 3 to 5 p. m.
Hosts were their daughters and son and their spouses, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Bilhou of Lemoore, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. Everett (Bud)
Schortman of Porterville. Mrs. Schortman is a native of Porterville and
Schortman, a native of Connecticut, came here in 1908. He opened and operated a
bicycle shop, management of which was assumed by their son when the senior
Schortmans retired in 1954. Mrs. Schortman was bookkeeper at the cyclery.
Schortman has been an active member and has gone through the chairs of the
local Odd Fellows lodge. For many years he and his wife have shared an
enthusiasm for hybridizing iris and their blossoms have received numerous
awards, abroad and locally. Their other hobby is travel.
They have nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
In addition to Mrs. Ernst, out of town guest included Mr. and Mrs. Henry Grider
of Fresno, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schortman and son Bill of Broad Brook, Conn.,
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Grider, Mr. and Mrs. Arno Ernst, Mr. and Mrs. James Foster,
Mrs. Madge Grider and children, Mrs. Terry Tson, all of Fresno.
