Origins of the Bice name

From A History of the Fulkerson Family from 1630 to the Present, by Laila Fulkerson Thompson (Vol. 51 of D. A. R. California Bible and Family Records), p. 160:

The Buys name is sometimes given as Bice, and Boyce. There is a record of a Femmetji Buys christened April 1698 in Brooklyn D. R. Church. Parents are Jacob Buys and Marritje. Jan Jansen Damen had a sister, Cornelis Hendrickje Jans who married a Buys and had a son Jan Cornelis Buys.

Jan Jansen Damen was Christine Vigne's (Dirk Holgersen's wife) step-father.

From a supplement which Ms. Thompson had sent me concerning this subject:

According to a member of the Buys family in Bakersfield, Calif., the family name originated from the time the Spanish occupied the Netherlands. The name Buys is a derivative of the Spanish name BAEZ (pronounced Buys), and there is a volume about this family that he had seen when he visited relatives in Holland.

Femmetjie Buys (b. 1698, Brooklyn, NY), wife of Folkert Folkertson (1697-1780), and great grandmother of Phoebe Bice Fulkerson is probably the source of the Bice middle name that can also appear in other descendants of Femmetjie and Folkert.
