Phebe (Fulkerson) Harris Pension records

Phebe (also Phoebe in the same document) B. Harris filed a "War of 1812 Application for Service Pension" in Sonoma County on 10 March 1879, as an 83 year old resident of Santa Rosa. Application was number 35, 443 (claim number: WC-28-639).

Richard Fulkerson, age 73, and T. S. Fulkerson, age 71 both signed as witnesses. Both claimed to have known her 65 years. Phebe B. Harris just signed with her mark.

James Voorhees of San Francisco was her attorney.

County of Sonoma

In the matter of the application of Phoebe B. Harris for widow's pension.

On this 21st day of July A. D. 1879, personally appeared before me clerk of the County Court, a court of record within and for the county and state aforesaid. Dr. T. S. Fulkerson aged 71 years a resident of the county of Sonoma State of California well known to me to be the reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn according to law disposes and says that his name is T. S. Fulkerson and he resides as aforesaid, that he was personally acquainted with Samuel Harris husband of the aforesaid Phoebe B. Harris that said Samuel Harris died in the county of Sonoma State of California on or about the 15th day of October A. D. 1864, that this knowledge of said death is derived from the fact that he attended on the said Samuel Harris professionally at the time and place aforesaid. That he has no interest direct or indirect in any claim the widow of said Samuel Harris may have against the United States.

That his post office address is at Santa Rosa, County of Sonoma, State of California

 

From her "Widow's Brief from 29 January 1880, it was "admitted" that she should get a pension of eight dollars a month starting from 9 March 1878.

She filed an "Application for Bounty Land" on 14 Sep 1885 at the age of 89. Joseph Childers and John Fulkerson signed their name as witnesses. Phebe B. Harris signed with a mark. It further states that Joseph Childers is 51 years old and living on Tupper Street in Santa Rosa and has known Phebe Harris for 30 years, and John Fulkerson is 49 and living near Santa Rosa, and has known Phebe Harris for 49 years.

When Phebe Harris passed away, her son-in-law sent this letter to the pension office:

Phebe B. Harris, Widow of Samuel Harris: War of 1812 died at my house in Calistoga May 25th 1895; her age was 99 yrs. 3 m. + 5days.

I (one of her sons in law) have been her custodian for about five years -- She has ben receiving a pen. of $12 per month Certificate No. 28 639 from 4th of March to her death 2 M + 20 days $32.00 would be due her. She wished the am't paid to me to help in paying her funeral expenses. There is no property left.

She had nothing but her Pension, the rest her children furnished.

Please inform me how to proceed to get the money.
