Can not match with any Barnes in the 1860 Census and can not find in the 1870 and 1880 Census for Sonoma County. There is a Frank and Kemen Barnes (both born in Virginia) family and an E. P. (born in Missouri) and Elizabeth (born in Indiana) Barnes family living in Santa Rosa in 1870.
William Barnes was sued by Ruth for divorce May 3, 1862 on grounds of adultery with Ruth's daughter, Maria Mize. Material has been extracted from this suit (file #1230 on reel #14, District Court (old series)), which was found at the Sonoma County Clerk's Office. It reveals what one might assume to be atypical circumstances for the times. The case also reveals a further mystery in that it appears that it was never resolved. Ruth is listed as being "Widowed/Divorced" in the 1880 Census.
