Notes:

"Aunt Katherine" or "Catherine". Helped raise the Wendt brothers after their mother had died. Appears to have been married for a short time but went by her maiden name.

From a letter which she wrote in 1914 after the death of her mother, Paulina (Lang) Wendt (Sender: Katherine Wendt, 926 Morgan St, Santa Rosa, Cal.; Addressee: Mr. Claude Wendt, Soledad, Monterey Co., Box 252, Cal.; Postmark: Santa Rosa Dec 28-14):

Dec. 26-1914

Dear Claude-

At last I will sit down and try and write you a few lines. We have been in such an upset since Mama died that I don't know what I am doing I have sent you several cards but it seems as though you did not get them. And I often wondered why you did not write.

We all have very bad colds here I have been just about sick since Mama died, but I went back to work again. As I just couldn't stay in the house.

Mama was only sick in bed from Sunday night until Thursday, she passed away about 2 oclock in the Thursday morning, she didn't seem to be very sick and didnt seem to have any pain at all she has been having smothering spells with her heart for several months but she seemed to get over them again and this last spell didn't seem to be near as bad as the others and we had the doctor with her all the time and he seemed to think she wasn't so very bad off, but the last day she was sick, she got just like your papa she seemed to choke up, and nearly smother, and the doctor called it pneumonia. She knew everything and every body until she closed her eyes. She seemed so cheerful all the time and not a word of complaint, she really thought she would get well all the time, as she has been just as sick before. Well it is very lonely here without her. You know she used to go to Mollie's and stay a week or two, so now I think she is out there and time for her to come home but she will never come. She looked beautiful, we buried her in all grey, a beutiful grey casket and a grey shroud, and you never saw so many beautiful flowers in your life there were enough to cover both graves, there were so many people every room was full - All on the porch and yard - They couldn't all get in the house. Mother looked beutiful. I only wish you could have benn here. I can't see why you didn't get your letter sooner Where is Stephen? We can't ever hear from him. Mama had a nice long letter from Douglas the day before she died and it pleased her so much. She always wondered why Douglas didn't write to her.

We have had very cold weather up here. We are having a very cold rain now. Oh! I wish it would get warmer. Well how did you enjoy your Christmas? We had a very quiettime and it was a very lonely day for us all.

Well Claude it is very late and I am sleepy as I have been working nights at the store so I must get to bed

- Write soon

Mayme Fred and Herold have very bad colds too they send their love so write soon. Yours, Katherine.
