Hugh Lindsay Patrick Watson was born 4 Apr 1842 at Dublin (now
Monroeton) in Rockingham County, NC, one of three children born to Frederick W.
and Margaret M. Patrick Watson. His brothers were James Dillon Watson (d. 1847)
and John Abner Watson (d. 1865) who was killed in a vain effort to recover some
stolen supplies from the Confederate Commissary at Monroeton. Hugh's mother was
the daughter of John A. Patrick (1793-1843) and Mildred Lindsay Patrick
(1797-1863). His mother had one brother, Dr. hugh Patrick (1820-1893), a well
known physician at Monroeton. Hugh's mother died on 7 March 1844 at age 22 and
was buried in the pioneer Patrick Cemetery on Haw River. His father Frederick
married Jane Scott Doak, a widow, in 1845. This union produced three sons, all
of whom moved to Arkansas in 1866. On 27 February 1862 Hugh L. P. Watson enlisted in Company E of the 45th North Carolina Regiment of the Confederate Army. He was mustered in as a Sergeant. On 13 February 1864 he transferred to Company D ("Rockingham Rangers") of the 63rd North Carolina Regiment (5th NC Cavalry) and assumed the rank of private. He was parold at Greensboro, NC on 13 May 1865. Hugh Watson married Celestia V. Rankin on 13 September 1865. She was the daughter of John C. (1814-90) and Sabra Ann Denny Rankin (1820-47) who were married in 1839. The Watsons engaged in agricultural pursuits on a 217 acre farm in or near the Benaja Community. Their surviving children were one son and four daughters. Celistia died on 20 June 1901 and was buried in the cemetery of Fair Grove Methodist Protestant Church were she and her husband were members. Sometime between 1902-04 Hugh moved to Greensboro to live with his children and in 1904 he sold his Rockingham County farm. He died at the home of his daughter Maggie W. Haynes on Oakland Avenue in Greensboro on 2 March 1927 at age 84. He was buried beside his wife at Fair Grove Church Cemetery in Rockingham County. In addition to Mrs. (John L.) Haynes his survivors included son W. H. Watson of High Point; daughters Mrs. Pearl Tyson of Greensboro, Mrs. H. W. Lamberth and Mrs. W. D. Lamberth both of the Monticello Community of Guilford County, thirty-two grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.- Research by Bob Carter.
