Notes:
George Washington Barber was a Woodruff County official and administrated Sarah (Wright) Holland's estate or else his son). His grandfather was Barkley M. Beard, and his mother, Henrietta (the wife of John F. Barber), ended up owning the land which the Beards school, the church, and the cemetery was on. She is also buried there (b. 5 May 1857, d. 23 Aug 1900). Also see Woodruff County Historical Society: Rivers and Roads and Points in Between, Vol. IV, No. 1, Winter, 1976, p. 9. From Cliff Yarbrough, a descendant (email from 16 Jul 2004): |
....I am the grandson of George Washington Barber (25 Dec 1883-16 Oct 1966) and Blanche Underhill Barber (24 Mar 1887-12 Dec 1951). My Mother, Julia Robins Barber Yarbrough (11 Nov 1920-6 Dec 1970) was their daughter and the sister of George W. Barber (20 Feb 1911-23 Dec 1988). My Mother attended Hendrix College in Conway upon graduation from McCrory High School and met my Father, Cleo C. Yarbrough,(1 Feb 1920-12 Dec 1988) from Conway. They married 15 Apr 1944 in Little Rock, Pulaski County AR. My parents moved to Baton Rouge LA in 1948... My Parents both died in Baton Rouge LA. My Dad died only about 2 weeks before George W. Barber, my "Uncle Bubba", in Dec 1988. We used to visit McCrory often when I grew up to see "Big Daddy", as my Grandfather George Washington Barber was affectionately known. He was always at work at Planter's Mercantile on Edmonds Avenue when we went in the summer and at Christmas (his birthday too!). "Big Daddy" had also owned and run G.W. Barber Agency Insurance before selling it.

From another of his emails dated 16 Jul 2004: |
I am sure my grandfather's name was GEORGE WASHINGTON BARBER. "Big Daddy" was known as G.W. Barber and called "G.W. Barber, Sr." by some. His son, my "uncle Bubba", may have actually been named GEORGE WINSTON BARBER- even though he was known as "G.W. Barber, Jr". I do recall now that you mentioned your Great great grandmother's probate bond that "big Daddy" was also a Notary Public, possibly until he finally got sick and died in 1966. He did sign his name as "G.W. Barber" to my best knowledge. "Big Daddy", was born in 1883; so he would have been in his 30's by the mid-1910's and 40's by the early 1920's. This would seem to argue for the older Barber having signed the probate bond. Also, to my knowledge, my Uncle, the younger Barber, never did this type of work. From my earliest childhood, "Uncle Bubba" farmed the Barber farm just out of McCrory south of old U.S. 64 (Raney Avenue in town). They raised cotton and soybeans mostly. "Uncle Bubba" was born in 1911 as you have. His wife, my Aunt Kathleen, is still alive and living in McCrory... Planter's Mercantile must have closed sometime in the late 1960's or possibly early 1970's before I got back to McCrory in August 1972. I remember being up in McCrory with my Mom and Dad in 1967 and possibly 1968 after "Big Daddy" died. They went back there in August 1970... I do not remember if Planter's was still there then. Mr. Grover McCrory, I think, lived until about 1972. His brother, known as "Mr. Jurd", died about 1960...
