From Barb Ballard Miller, a descendant of Hattie Ballard:

He was b Ohio 10-18-1855. Elijah worked on the railroad and died in a boiler explosion in San Francisco, 9-20-1898.

 

 

From Roberta Ballard Medina, another descendant of Hattie's:

...I've been told that he was a marble & tile setter (so were his son & grandson, my father & grandfather) but my cousin Barb Miller seems to think he worked on the railroad. I was told he died of a heart attack & she seems to think he was killed in a boiler explosion.
