Notes:
Date of birth obtained from family Bible transcription by Effie Joy. Copies of this transcription also list the year of her birth as 1865 and 1868 which are incorrect. According to a descendant, Barb Ballard Miller, they had three children and Hattie was believed to have remarried an Edward Hayes after the death of Elijah BALLARD. Also from Roberta Ballard Medina, another descendant (from Dec 2004 emails): |
Hattie was married to Elijah Anderson Ballard (they are my ggrandparents) but he died at 42 years of age in San Francisco & sometime after that she was supposed to have married Pa (Edward) Hayes but I cannot find any record of that marriage. I also have pictures of both of them. I've been getting alot of my info from my 86 year old mother, I wish I had ask more questions when other family members were still alive. ...Hattie Grant was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, California in 1928. ... [Hattie] was born March 23, 1865. The... child in the picture with her is my grandfather William Anderson Ballard her 1st born. She had 2 other children, #2 was Augustus Seaton Ballard, #3 was Gertrude Frances Ballard.

Hattie Elmira Grant married Elijah Anderson Ballard in San Jose 11-28-1878. He was b Ohio 10-18-1855. Elijah worked on the railroad and died in a boiler explosion in San Francisco, 9-20-1898. (There is another family legend here that the town of Ballard, Santa Barbara, County was named in honor of Elijah and this accident. This is NOT true, however, when there were telephone prefixes there was a BA-llard prefix in San Jose...which coincedentally was my prefix while I lived there...and suspect that this, rather than the town of Ballard is what carried Elija's name, but of course, can not prove it). They had three children, and I can supply info if you like. One of them was August Seaton Ballard which would tend to support the Augustus middle name for Henry as Seaton would have been his paternal Grandfather's middle name. I don't know much about what happened to Hattie after that Elijah's death, however believe she may have married an Edward (Pa) Hayes. Hattie died on August 15, 1928 in Oakland... Her address at the time was listed as 597 Fairmont. (of note, on the death certificate, Lige Ballard is listed as her husband)... |

Hattie Ballard Hayes had a collection of pictures which not only included pictures of her immediate family, but also members of the Foster, McGuire, Fulkerson, and Wendt families. From Roberta Ballard Medina (email Dec 2004): |
I am a gggranddaughter of Ruhama Doyle Cockrill & Henry A. Grant. I found your website thru my cousin Barb Miller... The main reason I'm writing to you is because I have several pictures from the late 1800's to early 1900's of people I could not identify with the family until I learned that Ruhama was married to Henry Cockrill & had 6 children. I have pictures with the names Foster, McGuire, Fulkerson & 1 child by the name of Bardin.... I saw the picture of one man named McGuire. I have a picture of Charles McGuire & his son [brother]Bert & daughter [sister]Ida... When my cousin Barb Miller told me about your website I couldn't believe it, then after I read some of the information, the pictures I have started to make sense. By the way I only just found Barb after thirty or so years of not being in touch. Another tidbit, years ago no one wanted these pictures, so my mother (who is not of this family line) said she would take them. They were in her possesion stored away in a trunk for alot of years. I asked her if I could have them & here they are. ...I don't know if this helps any but Hattie was also known as "Big Grandma". |

From an email message (18 Nov 2015) by Scott Ogden (Hattie's GG Grandson): |
I recently went to the office at Mt. View Cemetery to find Hattie Grant Ballard's marker (our family hasn't been able to find it for many years). They performed a probe and found it in the right place (Plot 48), covered by soil. ...Members of our family have always suspected that Hattie and Ed never married. Also, an 1865 birthdate means she married at about age 13. |
