Notes:
Believed to be the brother of William Cockrill, however, recent DNA research does not support this assumption. From ANDERSON, COCKRILL, MOFFETT, SMITH & Allied Families of Northern Virginia -- VOLUME 1: Cockrill Families of Northern Virginia, by James A. Burgess (James A. Burgess, Arizona: 2002), page 77: |
We do not have a family Bible and Virginia did not keep vital statistics until much later, so we can only make an educated guess as to his birth date. Anderson COCKRELL was the son of William COCKRELL and Hannah ANDERSON. Anderson COCKRELL married Mary JOHNSON the daughter of Jeffery JOHNSON and Sarah (Name sometimes spelled COCKREL, COCKRIL and COCKRILL). Most of our information comes from his will written 7 September 1791 in Fauquier County, Virginia. We know that he believed in God and was a Christian man who loved his family. He was not a wealthy man as he left only a couple of horses and few earthly possessions. From a later record we know that at his death he owned just enough property to pay his debts. We must assume that he spent his life farming in Fauquier County, Virginia. From a Fauquier County deed we know that he was responsible for what is described as a typical farm in those days. Anderson is mentioned as being a neighbor or living next to different individuals living in Faquier County, Virginia. We have not found a specific record showing that he purchased land, we do feel that he did own land on Chimney Stone Branch on Carter's Run. I have been unable to find Chimney Stone Branch on a map.

In the estate accounting of James Nelson dated 15 Apr 1772, Anderson COCKRELL, paid monies that he owed the said James NELSON. Will Book 2, pages 298-302. I notice there is a Templeman-Nelson graveyard near near Carter's Run. |

Ordered that Samuel PEPPER, James CORNWELL, Anderson COCKERELL, and William HOLTON, or any three of them being first sworn, do appraise the Estate of Jeffery JOHNSON, deceased and return the appraisement to the Court. |

To me this indicates that there were children who died before the will was written or not mentioned in the will, this emphasizes the importance that Jesse MOFFETT was his brother. Certainly Hezekiah, Reuben, Johnson J. COCKRELL, and Jospeh COCKRELL (who married Sarah FOLEY) are the most likely the unlisted sons of Anderson COCKRELL. We would love to have proof of their relationship to the family. |

Very few land records have survived on Anderson COCKRELL. One explanation might be that he inherited land from his father, William COCKRIL and the deed would be found in the lost records of Prince William County, Virginia. From Jeffery JOHNSON's will we know that he owned land near Chimney Branch on Carter's Run in the Manor of Leeds. This information is found in Will Book 1 page 469-470 dated 11 Jun 1782. This is also the Will that mentions Mary COCKRELL as the daughter of Jeffery JOHNSON and Sarah. It is VERY interesting to note that when Anderson COCKRELL witnessed the inventory of his father in law Jeffery JOHNSON, Anderson's name was spelled Andrewson on 11 Jun 1782. NOTE: Just cannot help wondering is this a clue to the Andrew COCKRELL mentioned in the early Northumberland County, Virginia for an Andrew COCKRELL who might be his ancestor. |
We found no mention of Anderson COCKRELL in the 1782-1785 State Enumeration of Virginia. |

Anderson COCKREL is the only COCKREL that was the head of a household in Fauquier County in 1787. |
Anderson Cockrell always very poor! An Aug 1801 report of agent on claim of Colin Dunlop and Son Co. in British Mercantile Claims 1775-1803 states "Anderson Cockrell formerly resided in Fauquier County; were always poor. He died in 1791 free from debt but with property more than sufficient to discharge claimant's demand." Jesse MOFFETT was one of his executors.
