Frank Baker's obituary from the Salinas paper (Harvey, page 373): |

HALF CENTURY OF RESIDENCE IN SALINAS ENDED BY DEATH | ||
Funeral services for Franklin S. Baker, 78,
beloved pioneer of Salinas, were held Tuesday at his late residence following
which the remains were taken to Santa Cruz for cremation. The ashes were placed
in the Salinas I. O . O. F. cemetery. The death of Mr. Baker marks the passing of a man whose vision of the future of Monterey County played a large part in the growth of the county. Many times in the early days did he prophesy that Salinas would some day become one of the leading smaller cities of the state, and materially indicated his faith in the county's future by buying and holding property. In 1878 Mr. Baker, then a young man, envisioned the future of the west, and left his home in Rushville, Ill., to seek his fortune in California. He first landed in Los Angeles and foresaw that someday that small community would become one of the largest cities in the nation. His father had just sold his farm in Illinois and Mr. Baker attempted to induce the elder Baker to come west and invest his money in the southern city. The father declined, however, so the young man engaged in the real estate business which he conducted for about four years. Then he came to Monterey County and continued his chosen profession, which he carried on to the time of his retirement 15 years ago. He was associated for many years with F. H. Lang. Although he did not gain a monetary fortune in the county, Mr. Baker two years after his arrial met and married Miss Mabel Harvey of Salinas, and with the three children that followed, Mr. Baker gained a fortune more precious than money. That he regarded his wife and family as treasure is indicated by his loving care and solicitude for their welfare. They always came first, and they are unconsolate at his passing. Up to five weeks ago, when he became seriously ill, Mr. Baker took a keen interest in the affairs of the city, state and nation, and was constantly reading. He had a keen love and appreciation of nature, and was a student of human nature as well. His kindly and tolerant attitude toward mankind endeared him to hundreds of friends, who will miss his cheering greeting. Besides his widow, Mr. Baker is survived by a son and two daughters. They are: Dr. F. Harvey Baker of Gardnerville, Nevada, Mrs. John Archibald Currie of Santa Barbara and Miss Florence Baker, librarian in the Oakland Technical high school. |
