On the 12th of
October, 1876, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. W. P. Van Winkle and Miss
Annie. E. McReynolds, who was born in Sebastopol, a daughter of John and Martha
(Buggs) McReynolds, the former of whom was a native of Virginia and latter of
Missouri. Mr. McReynolds came to California twice before finally settling
permanently in this state. On his third trip back, in 1856, he was married in
Missouri and that year he brought his bride to this state. At that time he
acquired a large tract of land one and a half miles south of Sebastopol, on
which he lived for a number of years, and then went to Green Valley, where he
bought six hundred and forty acres of land, three miles west of Sebastopol, on
which he lived until about 1880. He next went to Santa Barbara County and
bought a ranch near Lompoc, where he carried on Farming operations up to the
time of his death, which occurred in about 1890. His wife followed him in death
two years later. To them were born six children, namely: Annie E., now Mrs. W.
P. Van Winkle, Mrs. Etta Sullivan, deceased; John C.; Mrs. Maggie Houx; Walter,
deceased; and Mrs. Ethel Moore, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Van Winkle also became the parents of six children, as follows: William N. who is married and has four children, Myrle, Vivian, Edith, and Homer; Mrs. Edith Thompson, deceased; Mrs. Lola Santos, who is the mother of a daughter, Miss Verna Campbell; Arthur M., who is married to Lois Martin and lives on the home farm; Claude, deceased, who was the father of two children. Dorothy and Claude Jr.; Mrs. Lettie High who is the mother of three children; Jesse, Josie, and Zelma. In placing Mr. W. P. Van Winkle in the front rank of the enterprising and public-spirited men of his community, justice is rendered a biographical fact universally recognized throughout the community long honored by his citizenship although a quite and unassuming man, he contributed much to the material, civic, and moral advancement of his community, while his admirable qualities of head and heart and the straightforward, upright course of his daily life won for him the esteem and confidence of the circles in which he moved. |
