From the San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 6, 1904, p. 5, Section 3:

PIONEER STEPHEN McREYNOLDS
MET WITH TRAGIC END NEAR
SEBASTOPOL YESTERDAY

Twice Before He Had Been Near to Death in Runaway Accidents --
Was Well Known and Universally Respected

Stephen McReynolds, the well known pioneer of the Gold Ridge district, was thrown from his wagon seat in a runaway accident near Sebastopol yesterday and was instantly killed. At time of the fatality Mr. McReynolds was returning to his home at Pleasant Hill. His horses took fright at something and dashed away. When discovered he had passed beyond, the fall having broken his neck.

The news of Mr. McReynolds' death came as a great surprise to his family and friends. He was seventy-four years of age and was a native of Washington county, Va. When quite young he moved to Missouri and came across the plains to California in 1850 in the section of the county where he was residing at the time of his death. And near Bloomfield he had lived practicaly over half a century. He was universally respected.

Strange to say Mr. McReynolds prior to the runaway accident that caused his death yesterday had been very near death in two other runaways at least and had been quite badly hurt. At the time of the accident yesterday he was returning from Sebastopol where he had taken a load of hogs. Coroner Frank Blackburn held an inquest later in the day and a verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury. The remains were removed to the deceased's residence. Mr. McReynolds leaves a wife and the following children: Charles L. Dennis, Roy, Arthur, Perry and Melvin McReynolds, Mrs. John Donner and Mrs. Susie Hufman and Mrs. Delia Johnson of San Francisco. James McMcReynolds of Green Valley and William McReynolds and Jacob McReynolds of Oregon are brothers of the deceased.

The funeral will take place on Sunday morning from the Pleasant Church at 11 o'clock.
