Notes:
According to family legend, he had run away from his home in South Carolina and went to Mississippi when he was around 14 to 16 years old. His reasons are unknown, for he would never talk about his childhood or have any contact with his parent's family. Left Mississippi to take up residence in Arkansas in the later half of 1854.

Joined Company E, of the 47th Regiment of the Arkansas Cavalry at the outbreak of the Civil War (Service Record copied). Paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas on June 5, 1865. Applied for a disability pension as a result of losing an eye during the war. Claim (Ex #939) was filed December 7, 1891 (copied from Arkansas History Commission microfilm) and not in the pension index because it was rejected. A pension was not awarded by the review board for the reason that the eye was lost from small pox and not in battle.
