...first name was no doubt Adlai, which no one could either spell or pronounce
probably, for he went by the name A. H. or Adley H. most of the time... In 1850
he was seen as Adlia R., age 20, living with his father and most likely his
stepmother, Annie, age 34. In 1860, he should show up married and with three
children, but for som reason, I have been unable to find him in any census
records. In 1870, he had moved to Woodruff County, AR and was living near
his brothers. By this time he added two more children, both born in Arkansas.
It must be remembered that there was a Civil War going on between these two
dates, so there is no telling where the family might have been during this
time. The 1880 census of Woodruff County shows him as Horatio, thus giving
us his middle name. He is listed as being 48 (in 1870 he was 35 and 1850 he was
20), so it would seem he was born probably around 1831-32, since his older
brother was born in 1829. By 1880 his wife, Elizabeth, had died and he was
living with his daughter, now widowed, and her family, as well as Adley's three
youngest children... In 1853, Adley and his brother, James J. THOMPSON,
sold some land which was in Madison County. The buyer was John H. LANIER, the
date being January of that year. The name on the deed was Adley H. THOMPSON.
The 1870 census indicated his wife's name was Elizabeth, yet no marriage
records were found for him. However, it was discovered that in Carroll County,
TN, on 24 December 1851, there was an A. H. THOMPSON who married an E. N.
TAYLOR. Could this have been Adley H. THOMPSON? |
