Notes:
His name is a source of confusion: Johnson J. Cockrill had a cousin, Johnson J. Cockrell, who also lived in Kentucky and was the son of his father's brother, Anderson Cockrell. According to Dr. John Baker, he was a "State Senator & first jailor in Allen County, Kentucky. His portrait is up in the Court House at Scottsville, Kentucky, County Seat of Allen County." From Allen County, Kentucky History & Biographies ( a reprint by Mountain Press: Signal Mountain, Tennessee of History of Kentucky, by Lewis Colins -1882c and Kentucky: A History of the State, by W. H. Perrin, J. H. Battle and G. C. Kniffin - 1885), pp 36-37: |

[under the biography of Col. Robert F. Pulliam] Col. Pulliam's maternal grandfather, Ellis, was a native of Virginia; he came to Kentucky at an early day, and made his home for a time near Lexington, where he married Miss Biddie Cushenberry, and afterwards removed to the Green River country, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits. He died early and left a widow and three children; the widow afterward married Johnson J. Cockrell, who was the first representative of Allen County in the State Legislature, and theirs was the first child born in Scottsville.

Johnson J. Cockrill is listed in the early Warren County, Kentucky tax records along with his father, William. He appears to have had the most property of all the Cockrill family members living in the area at that time (as well as the most wealthy), and unlike the rest of them he also owned a number of slaves. In 1822 and several years after, Johnson is also listed as being in charge of his father-in-law's land on Difficult Creek and also included six building lots in Scottsville and two in Polium (Port Oliver?). During this time, under his own property tax listings, Johnson is also taxed for one building lot in Scottsville and two in Polium.
