In Santa Rosa
Rural Cemetery, 1853-1905 (Sonoma County Genealogical Society, Inc., Santa
Rosa, Ca; 1st Edition, March 1980), a Wilheminia Schwan is listed as
being buried in the Rural Cemetery (page 105). She was born in Germany and died
November 3, 1903 at 70 years and 16 days, which means she was born on November
19, 1833. Her father is listed as being Frederick Wendt from Germany and
her mother as "Paulina - -" also from Germany. Her husband is listed as
Leonard Schwan. This was confusing to me when I first read this,
particularly since I did not know at the time, the relationship of Wilheminia
to my great great grandfather, Frederick. He was born January 12, 1837 and
married Paulina Lang on January 17, 1869 and there was no mention of him
having a daughter named Wilheminia, nor was there ever a story in my
family, that "old Fred Wendt" had a sister who also had a family. Also,
when I obtained a copy of Frederick's death certificate I was confused even
more. It was filled out by his son Leonard, and it stated that Frederick's
father's name was not known but that he was born in Germany and that
Frederick's mother name is listed as being Paulina Lang (!) who was also
born in Germany as well.
Buried in the sites
close to Wilheminia's is Leonard Schwann (with an extra "n") who was
also born in Germany and died on January 9, 1904 at 71. There is also a
Frank Schwann buried between Wilheminia and Leonard, whose date and
place of birth is not listed, though he died October 29, 1936 at 71 as well.
His father is listed as being Leonard Schwan and his mother is
Wilheminia Wendt. The information was given by a Wilheminia
Forgett, 421 Washington Street., Santa Rosa. I attempted to find this
person with no luck.
Later, through using
the Surname Directory of the Sonoma County Genealogical Society,
1991-1992, I came into contact with Priscilla Talmage, the great x 3
granddaughter of Wilheminia Wendt Schwan. She told me that Wilheminia's
and Frederick's mother, Dorothy, also came out with them from New
Jersey. She was born either in Baden or Waganfeld and that she remarried
someone named Baker. Her son Henry Baker, was the first fire chief for
Santa Rosa. Dorothy's daughter Wilheminia also had a daughter named
Wilheminia who in turn had a daughter named Wilheminia -- the
name being passed along in the family in a similar fashion as Frederick
was in my side of the family. Mrs. Talmage became ill shortly after and I have
lost contact with her, however, I followed her leads to find information on
Wilheminia's mother (and my great x 3 grandmother).
