Mary A. was first seen in the 1860 census records listed as
being 5 years old and living with J. W. FISHER, 50, and his wife, Sallie, 47,
who, it was discovered, were her grandparents. They lived next door to Lucinda
McCauley, Mary Ann's step-grandmother, the mother of her step-mother, Mary Jane
McCauley. This was in the Spring Creek area of Madison County. Meanwhile, Mary
Ann's father and step-mother were in Henderson County just over the county line
and most likely on the McCauley farm, since Lucinda's husband had recently
died. In 1870, we find Mary A. THOMPSON living with her step-grandmother
McCauley, in DeView Twp., Woodruff County. Mary A. was listed as being 15 years
old. But she and her brother, apparently returned, along with their Uncle Hugh
to Madison County, for on November 4, 1871, Mary Ann Thompson married in
Madison County, Andrew H. CLARK(E). Although Mary Ann was barely 16 years old,
she must have been the Mary Ann who md. Mr. CLARK for dates of of her birth as
given in the family's records coincide with those given in cemetery records,
listing her as Mollie A. CLARK, wife of A. H. CLARK. She and her husband are
buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Apparently, although named Mary, she went
by the name of Mollie, which was a common occurrence in those days.
