Notes:
Alta had lived
in Austin, Texas for some time before coming to Foster City, California. My
mother remembers her being very pretty. Though it was said that she was not
particularly interested in the family history, she appears to had a wealth of
family stories which she told upon occasion (see her
letter about returning to
McCrory for a visit in the mid 1950's). I had intended to visit her when I
learned she was living relatively near to me, but she unfortunately passed away
before we could arrange a meeting time. Alta had listened (along with her mother, Daisy) to her future husband sing on the radio, before she finally met him. From a newspaper clipping (Newspaper not identified, though one assumes it to be a local Siloam Springs paper) in one of Alta's scrapbooks, dated Monday, April 10, 1939: |

Marriage Performed On Easter Sunday |

Miss Alta Neely, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. J. W. Neely of this city became the bride of George R. Moody, son of J. L.
Moody of Winfield, Kan., at a beautiful Easter Sunday ceremony solemnized at
the Methodist church yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Rev. A. L. Cline,
assisted by Rev. W. R. Dalton, performed the single ring ceremony in the
presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives. The alter was banked with ferns, and Easter lilies and spirea with candelabra forming the background for the ceremony. Proceeding the ceremony Helen Angelo McFee, pianist, and a string trio composed of Wm. McFee, cellist, and Mrs. Joe Maples Martin and Wilson Shultz, violinists, played "Romance" by Preston and "Liebestraum" by Liszt. Dennis Turner sang "Oh Promise Me" by DeKoven and "Because" by D'Hardelot. While the tapers were lighted by Miss Irina Jean Casey of Sulphur Springs and Miss Ernestine Crow, the string trio played "A Love Sonnet" by Kohlman. The bridal party entered to the strains of the wedding march from "Lohengrin" by Wagner, and the wedding march from Mendelssohn was used as the recessional. During the exchange of vows the soft strains of "I Love You Truly" by Carrie Jacobs Bond were heard. The bride was lovely in an Araby green costume of Parose fabric with red fox trim. Her veil and other accessories were of Japonica, and she carried a bride's bouquet of talisman roses and babies breath. Miss Billie Madge Pease, the maid of honor, wore a gold street dress, with accessories of Japanica and golden tan. She carried a colonial bouquet of pansies. The candlelighters' flowers were corsages of sweet peas. J. H. Dressel of John Brown university served the groom as best man. Al Smith and Bill Crow were ushers. Miss Neely attended John Brown university and is a graduate of the Cocke School of Expression at Dallas, Tex., and has taught expression here since her graduation. Until a short time ago she was employed as assistant to Dr. H. M. Flickinger. Mr. Moody, who is instructor of voice at John Brown university, received his B. M. and A. B. degrees at Southwestern college and did his graduate work in voice in Boston. Out-of-town guests who attended the wedding included Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Moody and Mrs. S. H. Kaster of Winfield, Kan. Immediately following the ceremony the newlyweds left for a week's honeymoon trip to points north. they will be at home after April 16 at 302 North Mt. Olive. The bride entertained members of the bridal party at her home on Twin Springs street Saturday night following rehearsal. |
