Notes:
"Grandma Holland" to my family. Known as "Aunt Sack" by the Wright family.
Enumerated with husband in 1880 Census (ED. 296 SD. 1 page 14), DeView Township, dwelling 114.
In 1900 Census (ED. 20 sheet 20), DeView Township, dwelling 363, Sarah Holland, head of household, b. May 1854, a. 46, bp. NC (both parents' bp. NC), occupation: farmer (can read and write). Children: John (20), Ollia (18), Lena (16), Lizzie (14), Henry (12), and Omea (9). Children all born in AR. Also enumerated is Huey Burrows, b. Feb. 1879, a. 21, bp. AR (father bp. TN, mother bp. AR) as a "boarder". Is this Burrows related to Decimus (Wright) Burrows family?
Grandma Holland
never remarried and lived the remaining 41 years which she survived her husband
in a small house on Seaman
Street in McCrory. It appears
that they had sold all their DeView property by 1892 and were probably living
in McCrory, by that time. The birth place of all their children after 1872
(John Thomas) is listed as being McCrory by Joe
Holland.
The exact location of her house on Seaman street has yet to be
determined. Joe Holland remembered a catalpa tree planted in front of
his grandmother's house which was also facing the old McCrory school yard (also
see interview of Ollie Wright
Cain). There is such a tree standing near the corner of Fifth Avenue and Seaman
Street, and the house on this corner lot was remodeled in the late forties
according to the present owner (who also said that the Jefferies family had
once lived next door). A couple of short remembrances of "Grandma Holland" by
Joe Holland and Helen (Holland) Riggs can be found extracted
here.
In 1910 Census (ED.
137 page 5), McCrory Township, Seaman Street, dwelling 69, Sarah
C.<sic> Holland, head of household, a. 55, bp. NC (both
parents' bp. NC), occupation listed as Dress Maker who owns her own shop.
Children: Lizzie F. (24), no employment, and Mary N. (29), Dress
Maker.
In dwelling 68, Ross O. Jeffries, a. 30, bp. AR,
self-employed laborer at livery barn. His wife, Myra, a. 25, bp. AR, and
daughter Edith, a. 2, bp AR.
In dwelling 70, Henry M.
Nafford, a. 29, bp. AR, owns livery stable. Wife, Lillie M., a. 21,
bp. AR. Two sons: Loue<Louie?>, a. 4 bp. AR, and George, a.
11/12 bp. AR. Sarah's son, Ollie Holland, is also listed in the same census as
living in dwelling 74 on Seaman Street.
In 1920 Census (ED.
249), McCrory Township, Seaman Street, dwelling 105, Sarah E. Holland,
head of household, a. 65, bp. NC (both parents' bp. NC), no employment.
Enumerated with her daughter, Elizabeth, a. 34, "Milliner in a shop."
Ross and Myra Jeffries lives at dwelling 124, then Wm. A. and
Josie Smitt (134), then Robert J. and Lizzie Willie (?).
Fannie M. Phillips family lives on the other side of Sarah, number (?
not readable).
The Jeffries family has had a significant history in McCrory, see Woodruff County Historical Society: Rivers and Roads and Points in Between, Vol. VII, No. 1 & 2, 1979, for "Inventory of Jeffries Family Papers," by T. J. Fakes.
