Eathton Thad Harris was born in
Talmage, Mendocino County, California, a small town just east of Ukiah, on July
18, 1905, in a large three storey house on the outskirts of town. Eathton was
the second child born to William Ottis and Jennie Lind (Oliver) Harris. The
family was still living there when the Great San Francisco earthquake hit on
April 18, 1906. Grandma Jennie said that dishes and windows rattled. Eathton
worked in the canneries in the Sacramento Valley as a young man and that was
where Eathton and Cleo met. They worked along side of each other. They were
married in Marysville, Yuba County, California on May 27, 1925. Later they
moved to southern California. They settled in Hollywood to look for work and he
was hired by Paramount Pictures and spent over fifty years working behind the
scenes. They only had one daughter, Bertha "Betty" Linn Harris, who
married Floyd Peter "Pete" Olson. Aunt Cleo and Uncle Eathton used to
travel to Oakland and Ukiah from Los Angeles on motocycles in the late 1940's
and early 1950's. Even Uncle Lionel and Aunt Peggy came once or twice. After
Uncle Eathton retired from the studios, Uncle Eathton and Aunt Cleo would
travel for months in their motorhome all over Canada, Mexico, United States and
Alaska to see different places where they had been making movies. Aunt Cleo a
few times was used as an extra. One time she was an indian in the movie
"The Big Sky", but I don't know which indian she played. The other
movies he helped to make was the original "King Kong" with Faye Wray
and "The Thing" with James Arness. Uncle Eathton worked on a few
television series, Lassie and Hogan Heroes for two. One of Uncle Eathton's best
friends was John Wayne. We have a post card from the Huntington Beach Dinner
House and Inn, one of John Wayne's sons, Michael signed it, along with a few
other people. Whenever they would come up for a visit, Uncle Eathton would show
us different card and coin tricks. He was fun to be around. He was also a
amateur magician. Aunt Cleo was more the serious of the two. Uncle Eathton died
in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles County, California on December 11, 1994 and was
buried in Forest Lawn Church Yard, in Sherman Oaks. Aunt Cleo died in Panorama
City, Los Angles County, California on December 11, 1994 and was buried along
side Uncle Eathton. They were married for sixty-two years.
