Notes:

In 1850 Census for Perry Township, Davis Co., Iowa, his large family is listed living in dwelling #91, he is a 56 year old farmer from Kentucky whose estate is worth $1200.

Did not come out to California until after 1860. Settled at the head of Rincon Valley, and lived there with his son-in-law, Josiah Downey.

Material extracted from a chronology compiled by Wilma Perin and Nancy Miller (Samuel's great great granddaughters):

Harris family lived in Grayson County for a few years around 1816. At least six children were born to them in Kentucky. Emigrated to Indiana and moved several times in that state. In 1841 moved to Crawford County, Illinois and 1843 moved back to Vigo County, Indiana. Moved to Davis County, Iowa around 1847 and show up listed in the 1850 Census for Perry Township for that county (seven children listed living with them at that time). May have been in route to California in 1854 but were not living in Davis County. Were living in Gentry County, Missouri in 1855 according to Phebe's Widows' Pension. Samuel died in Santa Rosa in 1864, Phebe in Calistoga in 1895.

Volunteered at Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky on 15 June 1814 during War of 1812, which includes the following documents:

Bounty Land Claim No. 20293 for Samuel Harris, dated Nov. 20, 1850.

Bounty Land Claim No. 178683 for Samuel Harris, May 18, 1855.

In Phoebe B. Harris' "War of 1812 Claim of Widow for Service Pension" form from 10 March 1879, she says that the time of her husband's enlistment, he was "19 yrs. farmer born in Madison Co., Ky, height, 5 ft. 9in. hair light curly, eyes, blue, complexion light." Since his discharge from the army, he lived in "Grayson Hardin Counties, KY, Virgo Co. Ind, Davis Co. Iowa, Gentry Co. MO, Sonoma Co., Cal." From her "Widow's Brief from 29 January 1880, it was stated that Samuel had spent 182 days in the service, and the two bounty land requests issued to him are 38.568 and 80.55.
