Generally known as Bernice Curtis Fouts and Bernice Wendt. I never knew that she was named after her mother, my Aunt Vera, until I started working on this. That Aunt Bernice was also a cousin, was very confusing to me when I was young. The family stories made it clear that she took the majority of the blame for the marriage breakup. However, they all seemed to get along with each other in later life. Aunt Sallie made up with Aunt Bernice before my grandmother. My grandmother and Aunt Bernice took a trip together to Hawaii after their husbands had passed away.

I saw Bernice several times, especially when I would be staying with my grandparents. She kept her house extremely neat and clean. I remember once she showed us a small chrome plated pistol which she had found in Uncle Doug's things shortly after he had died. She asked my grandparents advice if she should keep the gun for protection even though there was no bullets for it. My grandfather said it would work if she pointed the gun down towards the ground so that no one would notice that it was empty. I was told that she was very lonely in her later years.
