Notes:
He was known as "Rufe" (i. e. "Uncle Rufe" and "Cousin Rufe") to many family members. His mother died when he was ten years old, and was 18 and out on his own when his father remarried. Several stories from conversations have been collected about him. A champion fiddle player in his youth.
Apparently raised cotton in his younger years around the McCrory area (no record of him owning land in that area has been found). Later moved to Harrison and worked for the railroad. Became a master train mechanic. Several pictures of him in large group shots with trains. He chewed tobacco all his life and died of cancer of the mouth.
Unable to locate living with parents in the 1880 Census for Woodruff County -- these records are very difficult to read.
In 1900 Census (ED. 107, sheet 20 page 57A), DeView Township, dwelling 358, William Ruf Warner, b. Nov 1876, age 22, bp. AR (father bp. MS and mother bp. AR), married 1 year, an employed farmer who can read and write, rents farm number 286. Enumerated with wife, Cora, b. Nov 1875, a. 24, bp. AR (both parents bp. NC), no children born to her, can read and write.
In 1910 Census (Ed. 137, page 23A), DeView Township, dwelling 442, Rufe W. Warner, head of household, a. 33, bp. AR (both parents bp. AR), first marriage (married 11 years), a farmer who can read and write, works on his own account, rents a farm which is on farm schedule number 329. Enumerated with wife (who can read and write), Cora, a. 34, bp. AR (both parents bp. NC), first marriage (married 11 years, 4 children born to her with 1 presently living), and a son, Wylie, a. 7, bp. AR, not attending school. A boarder is also listed, by the name of Sam McMuly, a. 26, bp. MS (father bp. IN and mother bp. MS), single, a farm laborer who can read and write, works on his own account and presently is employed.
In 1920 Census (Ed. 245 page 3), DeView Township, dwelling 95, Rufus W. Warner, head of household, a. 43, bp. AR (father bp. MS and mother bp. AR), a farmer who did not attend school but who can read and write, works on his own account, on a farm whose number is unreadable. Enumerated with wife, Cora L., a. 49, bp. AR (both parents bp. NC), did not attend school but who can read and write, with no profession or trade listed. Children: William W., a. 17, bp AR, a farmer who did not attend school but who can read and write, and who works on a home farm; and John M., a. 9, bp. AR, attends school and can read and write, with no profession or trade listed.
His Uncle (instead of his father), Stephen Milton Warner was surety and witness for his marriage to Cora.
It appears that he had little contact with his father or other Warner family members until late in life. There apears to be no other Warner pictures in Cora's collection except for a early picture his half brother, Luther Loyd Warner, and a later picture of Guy Willard ("Buddy") Warner. It is not clear if these pictures were actually given to Rufus or originally obtain by Rufus's son, my grandfather, instead.
A Roof Warner is listed as purchasing plot "25 West 1/2" on Oct 15, 1905 of the New Addition of the "cemetery at DeView". This from a handwritten document which includes plot maps on LDS Fiche #6018052 (found by Pat Bodine), "Arkansas Tombstones: DeView, Arkansas." It appears that he had bought a plot at Odd Fellows Cemetery that obviously was not used by either him or Cora -- it is possible that the site contains the unmarked remains of their infant son, Aubrey.
