Supposed Members of the 1853 Hagans-Cockrill Wagon Train

As researched and compiled by Jeanne Thurlow Miller

From a note by Jeanne Thurlow Miller dated 3 February 1977:

We are now attempting to complete a record of the actual personnel whose trip to California in 1853 was recorded by William Zilhart. As names were not given, we have been forced to many devious paths to identify the actual members of the party. We believe the following families and single men came together from Bates County, Missouri, to the Santa Rosa Valley, starting April 24th and arriving October 2nd of that year, and stopping on the Thomas Hopper Ranch, south of Santa Rosa, near Penngrove.

According to Zilhart's diary, the group arrived at William Boyd Hagan's tent in Santa Rosa Valley on Octber 1, 1853. Though I am not clear about Jeanne's source, she believed that the members of the emmigration from Missouri, finally quit the trail at Hopper's ranch.

Susan (widow of Thomas, later married William Ray)

It is unclear what their relationship was to the rest of the Beaver family. It is also dubious that they were part of this 1853 party, since both appear in the California 1852 Census for Sonoma County as Thomas Beavers (a. 25, bp. OH) and Susan Beavers (a. 23, bp. OH).
