From a poor copy of
his will (Marion County, Indiana Wills Book A Page 94), the following
names for his children can just be barely made out: Abram A. Wakeland (oldest
son), Preston D. Wakeland, John J. Wakeland, and Rhuhanna S. Wakeland. One can
assume that Abram A. is Arthur A., however, it is unclear who Rhuhanna is.
Names for his children used for this genealogy were extracted from a list in
written by Eliza (Wakeland) Thompson in the Wakeland/Thompson diary.

Turner Wakeland was
enlisted in the 5th Infy by Major Foster on 3 August 1825 at Newport, Kentucky
(across the Ohio River from Cincinnati). Turner's records indicate he was born
in Bourbon Co. KY. Also, the following was included: 24 years, 5' 5-3/4", fair
complexion, hazel eyes, black hair, occupation: laborer. He was in Capt.
Plympton's compy. and went to Ft. Armstrong (Rock Island, IL) in 1826. During a
lot of his enlistment he was back at Ft. Snelling and Ill. He was discharged on
9 January 1827 (enlistment period was 5 years) on a Surgeon's Certificate
because of illness. He was given money for travel and food (subsistence) back
to the place of enlistment (Newport, KY). Travel -- 20 miles and 16 cents a day
-- total 740 miles from Ft. Armstrong (Rock Island, Il) and Newport, KY.
Subsistence -- 12 1/2 cents a day. Also receives clothing and pay due (A
private receives $5.00/month).
