Notes:
From his son, Isaac (author of the "Uncle Ike" letter), it was said that Charles was an apprentice cabinet maker at 16. This information has not been verified. In 1828, he enlisted in the 7th United States Infantry for 5 years and was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Rock Island, Fort Snelling, and Prairie de Chien. From the death certificate of son Charles B. Wakeland, a birth place of Preble Co. Ohio was listed. Charles Wakeland's obituary in The Times Record (from Marna Wakeland Wilson): |
Near Millersburg, Feb 26, Mr Charles Wakeland died age 66. Mr Wakeland had been a resident of Mercer County for many years and was respected as a good neighbor and citizen by all who knew him. He was stationed at Rock Island for Military duty for a number of years prior to any settlement being made in this section.
