The 1900 Census lists her first name as "Sarah." She was five months old at the time. Named after her grandmother, Sarah P. Wakeland (whose real name was Bolina Sally Hawkins), but was always known as Sallie. Her cousin, Ruth Kidwell, had a photograph of her from the early seventies wearing a dress that once belonged to Sarah P. Wakeland.

My "Aunt Sallie" lived alone in Napa on Seminary Street after her divorce. It was across the street from the hospital were I was born and just a few doors down from my father's sister. Her house was small but she had many things to look at, including a bunch of old stereopticon pictures which I spent many an hour looking at whenever I visited her.
